Japanese-inspired tealight lantern and Daruma-inspired charms created by Lady Pluuto using Kentucky Brown Bear clay.

Color Inspiration

My favorite color has always been Pink, but when choosing glazes I lean heavily on the color blue. It holds the most power and resonance for my own personal spiritual beliefs:

My Mother

Blue is my Mother's favorite color. She was my biggest supporter when I began taking my practice seriously. Anytime I see blue, I feel closer to her so I want to put a little bit of her into everything I can. I want to honor her spirit and show her how the support she gave will stay with me always.

Haint Blue

Haint Blue is actually more than 1 color. It describes a collection of different blues to blue-greens. Black Americans traditionally used crushed indigo to paint areas needing protection from evil spirits. The word haint is Black American vernacular that refers to a spirit seeking to chase victims to their death by exhaustion. The practice was intended to mimic the appearance of the sky or water, neither of which the evil spirits can cross.

Faience Art of Ancient Kemet (Ancient Egypt)

Similar to Haint Blue, the colors of Kemet's Faience range between different blues to blue-greens. Objects with these colors were considered magical. The colors represented the protective powers of Nwt, the Goddess of the Sky, the Afterlife and Rebirth. Although the chemisty behind the colors are different than Haint Blue, the protective nature of this collection of colors has clearly withstood the test of time and distance.

Symbolism

Everything I create involves symbolism. I'm always trying to find meaning in everything I create. Spiritual symbolism acts as an anchor for my creativity. Certain symbols seem to follow me no matter which artistic medium I am working with. I believe this is what gives my artwork what people have always described as a "dreamy" aesthetic.

I believe our lives are a combination of many dreams, ours and others. And that life is always communicating with us through different symbols. The symbols that have resonated with me throughout my life always make it into my art:

Lotus/Lily Flowers - Transformation

Cats - Guardian, protection

Elements of the sky (Sun, Moon, Stars and Clouds) - Divinity and the Heavens

Water - Source and void

Scarab Beetle - Neuroplasticity, open mind and connection to Spirit

My use of these symbols stems from my appreciation for Japanese and Kemetic spirituality. And of course, my love for cats.
