Washi

Lady Pluuto learning the traditional method of making Gampi Washi under the instruction of Mika Horie. (Japan, 2025)
The name Washi means "Japanese Paper". Washi is a light, yet strong paper made from the inner-bark fibers of three different plants found in Japan:
Gampi, Kozo and Mitsumata.
I am experienced with making Washi using Gampi and Kozo fibers. However, since I currently reside in South Carolina my long-term practice is with Mulberry. During my studies in Japan, I quickly learned that the main purpose for creating handmade paper is to be one with nature. It is in our best interest to use what we have locally available to us. Although it is possible to order the Japanese fibers, it is far more logical and sustainable to use Mulberry.
